Many problems
associated with motor vehicle accidents are often related to the
extremes in ages of drivers. One of the largest is that of the
new driver. Teenagers will always cause more than their share of
auto accidents do to their lack of experience and maturity to
drive with proper care. As time passes, their driving improves
but even that doesn’t last forever.
All drivers continue to age and eventually driving skills will
begin to diminish and it's up to each of us to address how we
handle our ability to continue driving safely. It’s important to
recognize that older drivers can make adjustments and one of the
easiest ways to adjust our driving habits is to pay greater
attention to such things as traffic signals, speed limits and
traffic signs.
Here are a few driving tips for the mature driver to consider
when operating a motor vehicle:
- Avoid driving during peak
traffic hours
- Stop driving at night
- Be more aware of feeling
fatigued and don’t drive if you are
- Avoid driving during poor
weather conditions
- Be aware whether your
prescription medications may affect your driving
- Reduce driving distractions
by avoiding cell phone, radio tuning, etc
- Voluntarily take driving
tests with an objective person who will evaluate your skills
- Contact your motor vehicle
department, driving clubs or senior associations which offer
assessments of driver skills
- When circumstances call for
it, consider giving up your driver license and depend upon
other transportation solutions
